ULTIMATE GUIDE TO RETRO SUNGLASSES: FIND THE PERFECT PAIR FOR YOUR FACE

I’ve always struggled to find sunglasses that actually make me look cool and fit my face. And let’s be honest—if there’s one accessory that can instantly give you that “cool factor,” it’s a good pair of shades.

But my struggles don’t stop there. I also have a terrible habit of losing or misplacing them. Every. Single. Time. Which is why I’ve accepted my fate: budget-friendly sunglasses only. Read my guide on how to find the style that fits your faceshape, or scroll to the bottom to see my reccomondations.

How to Find Sunglasses That Actually Suit You

As with everything in life, there’s apparently a science to this. So, grab a measuring tape and take notes—we’re solving the mystery today.

Why didn’t I do this ten years ago? No idea. I guess I just wanted a collection of photos featuring me in all the wrong sunglasses.

Step 1: Measure Your Face Shape

To find sunglasses that actually complement your features, you need to know your face shape. Here’s how:

  1. Measure Your Forehead – Place a measuring tape across the widest part of your forehead (usually halfway between your eyebrows and hairline).
  2. Measure Your Cheekbones – Start at the outer corner of one eye and stretch the tape across to the outer corner of the other eye.
  3. Measure Your Jawline – Find the spot just below your ear where your jaw begins and measure from there to your chin. Multiply by two.
  4. Measure Your Face Length – Start at the middle of your hairline and measure down to the tip of your chin.

Step 2: Identify Your Face Shape

Now, match your measurements to these common face shapes:

  • Round Face – Your face width and length are about equal, with soft, curved lines. Best sunglasses: Angular frames like square or cat-eye styles to add definition.
  • Oval Face – Slightly longer than wide, with balanced proportions. Best sunglasses: Lucky you—almost any style works! Wayfarers, aviators, oversized, take your pick.
  • Square Face – Strong jawline, forehead, and cheekbones nearly equal in width. Best sunglasses: Round or oval frames to soften your angles.
  • Heart-Shaped Face – Wide forehead, high cheekbones, and a narrow chin. Best sunglasses: Aviators, round frames, or classic wayfarers to balance the face.
  • Diamond Face – Narrow forehead and jawline, with cheekbones as the widest part. Best sunglasses: Cat-eye or oval frames to highlight your cheekbones.

Step 3: Consider Your Pupillary Distance (PD)

For the perfect fit, your sunglasses should align with your eyes. If they feel off, your pupillary distance (the space between your pupils) might not match the frame width. Many online retailers let you check this before buying—so no more guessing!
