I went back in 2015 for Spring Break, and at the time, it was incredibly affordable. While prices have risen since then, Costa Rica is still a reasonable destination compared to other tropical getaways.

While it might not be the typical Spring Break destination, it checks all the boxes—beautiful beaches, fun nightlife, and plenty of activities. Many younger travelers visit Costa Rica to surf, explore, and experience the laid-back beach town atmosphere. There are also several beach parties hosted throughout the country, making it a great alternative to the usual Spring Break spots. Costa Rica has severalairports, but the two main ones are:
- Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) – Located in San José, the capital, this is the largest and busiest airport. If you’re looking for the cheapest flights, this is often your best bet.
- Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport (LIR) – Located in Liberia, this airport is more convenient if you’re heading to the Pacific coast, but flights here can sometimes be pricier.
I recommend booking a round-trip ticket to San José and then taking a domestic flight, bus, or rental car to your final destination.

When I was there back in 2015 we rented 3 ATVs to get around – this was really fun and saved us a lot of time. We also lived in a place where we could coock our own food so this was perfect for gettin gorceries and getting around to see sights.
