TRAVEL: COSTA RICA

Costa Rica might not be a hidden gem anymore, but it’s definitely worth a visit. With its stunning beaches, warm weather, and diverse landscapes, it has something for every type of traveler. I went back in 2015 for Spring Break, and at the time, it was incredibly affordable. While prices have risen since then, Costa Rica is still a reasonable destination compared to other tropical getaways.

Whether you’re looking for a budget-friendly adventure or a luxurious escape, Costa Rica offers the perfect balance. While it might not be the typical Spring Break destination, it checks all the boxes—beautiful beaches, fun nightlife, and plenty of activities. Many younger travelers visit Costa Rica to surf, explore, and experience the laid-back beach town atmosphere. There are also several beach parties hosted throughout the country, making it a great alternative to the usual Spring Break spots. However, if you’re looking for a more upscale experience, Costa Rica boasts multiple high-end resorts with top-tier amenities.

Getting There

Costa Rica has severalairports, but the two main ones are:

  • Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) – Located in San José, the capital, this is the largest and busiest airport. If you’re looking for the cheapest flights, this is often your best bet.
  • Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport (LIR) – Located in Liberia, this airport is more convenient if you’re heading to the Pacific coast, but flights here can sometimes be pricier.

I recommend booking a round-trip ticket to San José and then taking a domestic flight, bus, or rental car to your final destination.

Where to Go for a Budget-Friendly Trip

If you’re traveling on a budget, you’ll want to focus on destinations that offer affordable hostels, cheap local food, and plenty of free activities. Some great options include:

  • Tamarindo – A fun surf town with a lively backpacker scene, budget-friendly hostels, and nightlife.
  • Puerto Viejo – Located on the Caribbean coast, this laid-back town is perfect for travelers looking for an affordable yet vibrant atmosphere.
  • Montezuma – A small bohemian beach town with waterfalls, yoga retreats, and stunning beaches, all without breaking the bank.
  • La Fortuna – While slightly inland, this is the gateway to Arenal Volcano and hot springs, and you can find budget-friendly stays here.

Where to Go for a More Upscale Trip

If you’re looking for luxury, Costa Rica has some breathtaking high-end resorts with world-class service. Some top destinations include:

  • Papagayo Peninsula – Home to luxury resorts like the Four Seasons and Andaz Papagayo, this area offers pristine beaches and top-tier service.
  • Santa Teresa – A stylish surf town with boutique hotels, fine dining, and a laid-back but upscale vibe.
  • Manuel Antonio – A mix of luxury and nature, with high-end eco-resorts and stunning ocean views.
  • Arenal & La Fortuna – The perfect mix of adventure and relaxation, with luxury resorts featuring private hot springs and spa treatments.

Nice to Know About Costa Rica

  • Currency: The local currency is Costa Rican Colón (CRC), but USD is widely accepted.
  • Weather: Dry season (December-April) is the best time to visit. Rainy season (May-November) can still be great, but expect afternoon showers.
  • Safety: Costa Rica is one of the safest countries in Central America, but petty theft can happen—keep an eye on your belongings.
  • Transportation: Buses are cheap but slow. Renting a car offers more flexibility, but be prepared for some bumpy roads.

Tips for Booking Cheap Flights & Staying on Budget

  • Book flights early – Prices tend to rise closer to departure.
  • Use flight comparison tools – Google Flights, Skyscanner, and Hopper can help find the best deals.
  • Consider alternative airports – Flying into San José and taking a bus might save you money.
  • Stay in hostels or Airbnbs – Costa Rica has great budget-friendly stays, from beach bungalows to jungle lodges.
  • Eat at “Sodas” – These local restaurants offer authentic Costa Rican meals at a fraction of the price.
  • Take advantage of free activities – Hiking, beach days, and waterfall visits don’t cost a thing.

Costa Rica is the perfect Spring Break destination for those looking for adventure, relaxation, or a mix of both. Whether you’re traveling on a budget or treating yourself to a luxury stay, there’s something for everyone.

When I was there back in 2015 we rented 3 ATVs to get around – this was really fun and saved us a lot of time. We also lived in a place where we could coock our own food so this was perfect for gettin gorceries and getting around to see sights. However, if you are going longer distances I would recomend a car. Our longest ride was about 45 minutes and that was pusing the limit. Read the guide to renting an ATV in Costa Rica.
